Healthy Eating Tips



You don't have to give up eating to cut the fat, cholesterol and salt. You just need to think about what you order. Many of the menus highlight low-fat and low-sodium dishes. But if you can't find what you want, just ask. Explain what you need the waiter or waitress. Or ask to see printed nutrition information.
 

Ask what you want

· Ask that foods prepared with little or no fat and no added salt.
· Ask that sauces to stay away from or served on the side. Choose sauces made with tomato instead of cream or cheese.
· Ask steamed rice or fried or boiled potato, without butter or sour cream.
· Ask that vegetables be steamed and served without butter or sauce. Ask lemon juice or vinegar to sprinkle them taste.
 

Keep these tips in mind

· Choose minestrone or vegetable soups. Ask sodium content.
· Order a salad sauce side. Dip a fork sauce, then a salad.
· Find the fish, chicken, turkey, or meat that is fried, roasted, stewed, or steamed.
· Order 1 or 2 low-fat appetizers or soup and salad instead of a main course. Or eat only half of the main course and take the rest home.
· If you want dessert, try fresh fruit, nonfat yogurt or sherbet. Or share a dessert.
 

Foods to avoid

· Donuts, muffins and pastries
· Coconut, vegetable butter, cream or cheese sauce
· Cream, whole milk, and powdered creamers
· Bacon, liver, lunch, meat, minced meat, and fish oil
· Sweets and foods made with butter, coconut or palm oil, or hydrogenated fats
